Mandaue, Lapu-lapu Cities Renew PhilHealth Sponsorships May 14, 2012

The Local Government Units (LGUs) of Mandaue and Lapu-Lapu cities recently renewed the health insurance sponsorship of around 31,000 families for two-years ending December 31, 2013.

Mandaue City Mayor Jonas C. Cortes signed a memorandum of agreement with PhilHealth Region 7 Vice President William O. Chavez for the coverage of 15,000 poor families at the Mandaue City session hall. Witnessing the signing of the agreement were PhilHealth President and Chief Executive Officer Dr. Eduardo P. Banzon, PhilHealth Region 7 officers, and Mandaue City Vice Mayor Glenn O. Bercede together with the city councilors.

Cortes said that “helping our fellowmen is not just the moral test of the government, but it is a moral obligation of a progressive society.” He said it is the obligation of the City to help and give back to the taxpayers, which is why he is strengthening the health care coverage of Mandauehanons by securing two years of quality health care for 15,000 indigent residents.

Some of the beneficiaries of the sponsorship are the Clean and Green workers of the solid waste management program of the city.

The Mandaue City Government also has 2,965 constituents listed in the National Household Targeting System for Poverty Reduction (NHTS-PR) of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) whose PhilHealth coverage is sponsored by the national government.

On the same day, Mayor Paz C. Radaza of Lapu-Lapu City also signed a memorandum of agreement with PhilHealth for the two-year coverage of around 17,000 families. Together with PhilHealth officers, Lapu-Lapu City's health officer Dr. Rodolfo C. Berame, and the chairman of the Committee on Health and Hospital Services Dr. Cornelio A. Pahang, witnessed the signing of the agreement at the conference room of the Lapu-Lapu City Hall.

Radaza assured Banzon that the City will increase the number of sponsored families per year. The City Government also has 6,356 constituents in the NHTS-PR list of the DSWD whose PhilHealth coverage is sponsored by the national government.

On both occasions, Banzon said that PhilHealth will soon be rolling out more benefits and improved services for its members. He said it is not only the benefits that are important, but that the benefits should be simple. The members, especially the poor, should easily understand their benefits.

He also mentioned some new benefits and services, like the Primary Care Benefit Package I (PCB1) through which primary preventive services, diagnostic examinations and selected drugs and medicines may be availed of for free at rural health units or health centers and accredited hospitals by members under the Sponsored Program, Organized Groups (OG) and Overseas Workers Program, and their qualified dependents. For members who want more coverage, a benefit package called PhilHealth Plus shall also be offered in the future.

At the same time, the PhilHealth Customer Assistance, Relations and Empowerment Staff (CARES) were also deployed in various government hospitals nationwide.

Banzon said that PhilHealth shall continue to pursue initiatives to improve its services and benefits in support of the Aquino Health Agenda to provide Universal Health Care (UHC) for all Filipinos. (END)
