PhilHealth joins DOH Fun Run May 13, 2011

Let's jog, walk, bike or run for a healthier lifestyle.

In support of the Department of Health's fight against the rising incidence of non-communicable diseases, the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) is joining the nationwide fitness event dubbed "Ehersisyong Pangkalusugan para sa Lahat" on Sunday, May 15, 2011 at the Quezon Memorial Circle in Quezon City.

This fitness event is encouraging everyone to exercise and lead a healthy lifestyle in order to reduce if not eradicate the risks of non-communicable diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, chronic respiratory diseases and diabetes which, according to Health Secretary Enrique T. Ona, are diseases that clearly threaten human health and development.

PhilHealth is actively supporting DOH's efforts at promoting healthy lifestyle practices such as engaging in physical activities, avoiding tobacco and alcohol, and having good nutrition and a well-balanced diet.

The activity will engage participants in various activities that will include running, walking, jogging, and biking. Participants will come from different starting points in Quezon City, one of which is at the Sunken Garden in University of the Philippines in Diliman where more than 200 PhilHealth officers and employees are expected to originate before proceeding to the venue for the main event which includes mass calisthenics and hataw exercises.

Some 4,000 healthy lifestyle advocates from the DOH and attached agencies including PhilHealth are expected to join the fun run with no less than President Benigno S. Aquino III leading the marathon.

The event will also have several exhibits and displays that will provide health services like bone scan, random blood sugar check, body mass index determination, diet counseling, among others, aside from helpful information on leading healthy lifestyles. END
