PhilHealth Joins "Walk for Life," Strengthens Commitment to Welfare of the Elderly October 17, 2019

The Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) together with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and other government and non-government organizations led this year's "Walk for Life" with the theme "Healthy and Productive Aging Starts with Me!" The activity aims to heighten public awareness on being healthy as everyone's responsibility, and that being healthy and productive is attainable with the various support from the government and other sectors.

The event was part of the observance of this year's Elderly Week every first week of October in accordance with Presidential Proclamation No. 470 s. 1994 issued by former President Fidel V. Ramos that gives importance on elderly Filipinos in nation building.

As a partner in providing relevant programs for this sector, PhilHealth automatically covers all senior citizens under its Senior Citizen by virtue of RA 10645 which provides for the mandatory PhilHealth coverage of all Senior Citizens. It also implements the Program for those who have already reached the applicable retirement age and have paid at least 120 months premium contributions to the program.

As of December 2018, PhilHealth covers more than 11 million beneficiaries from both the Senior Citizens and Lifetime programs representing 16 percent of its total registered beneficiaries. Around Php 31 billion have also been paid by PhilHealth in terms of benefits. In addition to their entitlement to inpatient and outpatient benefits, both senior citizens and lifetime members can also avail of the expanded primary care benefits from accredited of their choice.

Representatives from the Department of Health, DSWD, and Office of Senior Citizens Affairs also gave updates to an estimated 1,500 participants with regards to the various benefits of senior citizens in the country. The event reminded the elderly to be more conscious of their health; and for the younger generation to take care of them and show gratitude for their efforts and sacrifices for a better future.
