“Life always offers us a second chance—It’s called tomorrow.” ----Luriel Y. Fabian, 34 years old, PhilHealth self-employed member.
In 2008, Fabian was diagnosed with kidney failure which prompted him to undergo dialysis sessions two to three times a week. His 45 days allowance for dialysis sessions per year under the National Health Insurance Program was extended to 90 days for outpatient dialysis and this was of great help to his family.
The ailment left the family physically and financially challenged, prompting Fabian to resign from his previous work as a programmer. His wife had to seek greener pastures to provide for the expensive treatment.
In July 2016, life’s blessings came pouring even in the midst of this dark chapter. PhilHealth’s Z Benefit Package for Kidney Transplantation amounting to P600,000 came to the rescue, and a very generous employer shouldered the other half of the P1.2M cost of operation done in Angeles University Foundation, a private Z benefit provider in Region III.
Indeed, this experience best exemplifies that “life is not about waiting for the storm to pass, it’s about learning to dance in the rain.”
