April 9, 2014 is not a holiday for the PhilHealth Local Health Insurance Office- Camarines Sur, PhilHealth Regional Office V representatives, RHU Caramoan, as well as volunteer doctors from the DOH- Center for Specialized Health Care. These personnel are instead, working on the ground to stage the Alaga Ka program to benefit indigent PhilHealth members under the Listahanan in the island municipality of Caramoan.
451 indigent PhilHealth members identified by the DSWD's Listahanan in Caramoan were able to take advantage of PhilHealth's primary care benefits thru the Tamang Serbisyong Kalusugang Pampamilya (TSEKaP). This included body and weight measurement, check up, and medicines.
Wilma Ferrer and Eliza A. Sajulga are among the DSWD's 4Ps members took the opportunity to get their 8month old babies checked up today during the Alaga Ka program. They shared with us that they availed of PhilHealth's NBB when they gave birth at the municipal hospital last year.
Meanwhile, 10 members under 4Ps from Bgy Colongcogon travelled 45 minutes by boat to the town proper, to take advantage of the free check up and get treatment for diarrhoea for their children. Their 4Ps cards are as good as cash to them in times of illness, giving them ready access to public health services thru PhilHealth.
Caramoan currently has a total of 6, 040 indigent members subsidized by the National Government based on DSWD's Listahanan. Alaga Ka aims to empower these members about their PhilHealth benefits so they may be able to take full advantage of their health insurance. The partner agencies' support helps PhilHealth intensify these efforts in the fulfillment of the mandate of kalusugang pangkalahatan.
This is why the Alaga Ka program was staged while the whole nation celebrates the Day of Valour this April 9. As LHIO Camarines Sur's OIC Ma. Lourdes Mabeza puts it: "72 years after the Bataan Death March, most of us are still prisoners of poverty, marching towards uncertainty, getting ill along the way. But we were also able to make strides in those 72 years in insuring more and more people against financial risk of hospitalization. PhilHealth and partners for KP's commitment towards universal health care is the driving force to making health, and development, more inclusive."
She states that this is an opportune time to salute modern day heroes like these RHU Caramoan personnel, the volunteer doctors from DOH- Center for Specialized Health Care, and PhilHealth staff who continue to brave the distance, those who are on working holiday, committed to bringing health services closer to those who need it most.
