PhilHealth marks 19th year, leads nationwide observance of National Health Insurance Month February 17, 2014

The Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) is spearheading this year’s back-to-back observance of the National Health Insurance Program (NHIP) Month for the entire month of February and its 19th anniversary on February 14.

PhilHealth was established in 1995 by virtue of Republic Act 7875 as amended which was signed by then President Fidel V. Ramos on February 14, 1995. It administers the NHIP which aims to provide all Filipinos with financial access to health care.

The observance of NHIP Month was institutionalized by Presidential Proclamation No. 1400 in 2007 to enjoin all government agencies, local government units, government-owned and controlled corporations, government financing institutions and the Press in "stimulating public awareness on the issues involving social health insurance".

This year’s anniversary theme, "Benepisyong PhilHealth: Alamin at Gamitin" aims to empower its members and their qualified dependents with timely and accurate information about their benefits and how to avail of these in times of costly health situations in the family.

"PhilHealth will only be relevant if members know their entitlements and avail of them in times of need. This is why we continue to strengthen our efforts at informing and educating them, especially those in the farthest places" PhilHealth President and CEO Alexander A. Padilla said.

A simple yet meaningful month-long celebration was highlighted by the holding of the Social Health Insurance Education Series (SHInES) at the Senate of the Philippines, formal signing ceremonies with partner agencies to reinforce partnerships for enhanced public service and benefit delivery, a press conference, bloodletting drive among its employees, and hospital visits nationwide.

"We encourage all our stakeholders to join us in celebrating our 19th year as well as the NHIP Month so that together we can further raise public appreciation of social health insurance which to date shields close to 80 million beneficiaries against costly hospitalization" Padilla added.
