President Aquino Graces ALAGA KA Launch March 28, 2014

Sagarin ninyo ang pakinabang bunsod ng pagkakataong ito.

Thus said President Benigno S. Aquino III as he addressed thousands of less privileged families at the launching of ALAGA KA para sa Maayos na Buhay program, an advocacy initiated by the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) and the Department of Health, at the Quezon City Memorial Circle yesterday.

Aquino said that the rationale behind the advocacy campaign is clear - the more people are aware of their health care benefits, the better will be their state of health. "Ang kaalaman ay kapangyarihan. Mas mapapakinabangan ang ating mga programang pangkalusugan kung mas marami ang nakakaalam nito," he said.

Aquino also emphasized that "layunin ng ALAGA KA na imulat ang mahigit 14.7 milyong mahihirap sa mga serbisyong hatid ng DOH at PhilHealth."

The ALAGA KA program is a convergence of national and local government resources for the health care of families included in the National Household Targeting System for Poverty Reducation or Listahanan of the Department of Social Welfare and Development. It is an advocacy campaign to showcase what the government is doing to promote primary health care services especially among those in the vulnerable sector of society.

Aquino also acknowledged the support of local government units in the activity. "Inaasahan natin ang pakikipagtulungan ng lokal na pamahalaan," even as he recognized the important role that local government units play in bringing health care to the needy. "Kayo ang mas nakakaalam kung saan ang mga lugar na nangangailangan ng kalinga" and that " kung masigasig at maayos ang ating ugnayan lalo na sa pambansang pamahalaan, tiyak, uugong ang magagandang balita hanggang sa mga pinakaliblib na kanayunan."

He also called on the local chief executives to let the national government know what else they need to make sure that these health services are brought to the farthest regions of the country. "Sa mabuting pamamahala, bumubuti ang kalagayan ng ating mga boss," he said, adding that the government will continue working "upang marating ang panahon na imbes na iasa pa ni Juan ang paggaling sa hilot, magpapagamot siya sa ating maaasahang propesyunal."

On the other hand, Alexander A. Padilla, PhilHealth President and CEO said that this year, 14.7 million poor families are assured of PhilHealth coverage by virtue of the increased government resources for the annual premium contribution of these families. "P35 bilyon ang inilaan ng ating pamahalaan para sa mga pamilyang ito, at ang halagang ito ay tatlong beses mas mataas kaysa sa nailaan sa mga nakalipas na taon," he said.

Also present during the launch ceremonies were Health Secretary Enrique T. Ona, Education Secretary Bro. Armin Luistro, and Mayors Herbert Bautista of Quezon City, Del de Guzman of Marikina City, Len Oreta of Malabon City and John Rey Tiangco of Navotas City.

The launch was participated in by the 16 cities and 1 municipality in the National Capital Region. Through their respective city and municipal health offices, primary care services such as blood pressure monitoring, body mass index measurement, and lifestyle modification counselling were provided to PhilHealth members listed under the Listahanan of the DSWD.
