PhilHealth Benefit payments expected to exceed P 62B for 2013 October 5, 2013

THE Philippine Health Insurance Corp. (PhilHealth) anticipates total benefit payments of at least P 62.98B this year or some 34% increase from previous year's 47B.

"The Corporation releases some P 1.2B per week for benefit payments" said PhilHealth President and CEO Alexander A. Padilla adding that "for the period January-June of this year alone, PhilHealth already reimbursed a total of P 26 billion, which is already 30 percent higher from the P20B disbursed during the same period in 2012".

The increase is attributed to the continuing enhancement of PhilHealth benefits which substantially cover hospital expenses of members and their dependents. These benefits also ensure totality of care and attainment of better health outcomes especially on its low risk and end-stage renal package worth P 600,000, P 210,000 for childhood leukemia and P 100,000 each for early stage breast cancer and low to intermediate risk prostate cancer.

PhilHealth also introduced catastrophic packages for Coronary Artery Bypass at P 550,ooo, Surgery for Tetralogy of Fallot for P 320,000, Surgery for Ventricular Septal defect for P 250,000, Cervical Cancer chemoradiation with cobalt and brachytherapy (low dose) and cervical cancer with linear accelerator and brachytherapy (high dose) for P 120,000 and P 175,000 respectively.

Improved subsidies to various medical cases and expanded coverage also pushed benefit payments upward. This also means that more and more beneficiaries are availing themselves of the benefits at the time they need them most.

The continuing expansion of service facilities also contributed in the increase in benefit payments. Nine out of ten DOH licensed hospitals are now PhilHealth accredited for a total of 1,622 health care providers nationwide, while over 24,414 health care professionals have also been accredited across the nation.

“We will continue to enhance our benefit package to be more relevant to the millions of members not only here but also abroad” Padilla stated.
