TWO Filipina heads of government corporations are currently leading discussions on social protection in Lao PDR.

Lorna O. Fajardo, Acting President and CEO of the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) and Corazon de la Paz-Bernardo, President and CEO of the Social Security System (SSS) are attending the 21st Board Meeting of the ASEAN Social Security Association (ASSA) in Lao, PDR.

Fajardo is the Chair of the ASSA while de la Paz-Bernardo has just been re-elected to her second term as President of the International Social Security Association (ISSA). Both are actively participating in the ASSA Board Meeting which is aimed at promoting social security programs in the Asia-Pacific Region.

The ASSA was organized primarily to strengthen regional cooperation where social security practices are concerned. It is composed of eight (8) member-countries, namely, Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei Darussalam, Singapore, Lao PDR, Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines. These countries are brought together to constantly exchange insights on how social protection measures are being carried out in their respective areas, especially in the area of training, research and development.

Twice each year, the ASSA meets and from these meetings arise resolutions and organizational statements that determine the agenda for the following year's forum. (END)
